Yesterday I was asked the question “when you photograph people, what is it that you look to capture in your shot?” I know it’s cliche but I always connect with people by looking into their eyes. I try to capture that in my photographs. I feel like it helps the viewer connect to the image.

I have been lucky to be shooting a lot outdoors recently. The summer light is amazing. This is what I call a happy accident. I always keep shooting after the talent thinks that we have the shot – you can catch some extra shots that are worth keeping.

Off to a big preproduction meeting this morning but this is one of the images that I shot with the new Nikon D3s that they sent me to test. I will talk more about the camera this afternoon and do some compare and contrast on what I loved and what I could live without.

Recently I held a very large casting at the studio. This actor came to audition and right away I knew that I wanted to make a portrait of him that would have a retro look and feel about it. It just so happens that he loves dogs and what is more classic than a boy and his dog? A lot of times when I look at vintage photographs, one of the things that I think makes them good is that they are from a time that has past. The image doesn’t portray the everyday familiar. With the proliferation of photography and snap shots that we look at everyday, sometimes it takes an image that is not set in current time to make us stop, look, and remember.

It’s been summer for about a week now. We have been lucky to be shooting indoors recently. Today’s high will only be in the low 90′s but oh the humidity.
