It’s interesting lately.  The majority of the jobs that I have been shooting recently have some sort of video/motion component to it.  Shooting video for the web or mobile media should be more than just flipping the switch on your DSLR to video mode.  I like to push the creativity.  Give the audience something that isn’t expected.  We see so many images on a daily basis I want to do something that makes you stop.  And look.

I love light.  The right light evokes emotion.  I was honored to be hired to shoot the very first animated iPad piece for Reader’s Digest.  They have launched their iPad app this month.  The iPad is a giant leap for traditional publishing and Reader’s Digest has done a great job embracing the technology.  The intro to their app that I shot is actually all stills.  Individually lit, treated, animated together, and set into motion.  I am able to control the light and the quality of each individual image to give it a stylized look.

I knew the iPad was going to make changes in the way we do things and working with the team at Reader’s Digest helped me to further understand the power of creativity of this relatively new media outlet.  I feel like we are just now starting to embrace the reach of mobil media.  I am excited about it and the endless possibilities for the creativity.

We just wrapped a shoot for American Airlines.  What an amazing group of women.  The stories, the laughs, the fun on set – a day to remember.

The inspiration word for this shoot was “Speakeasy” and “Film Noir”.  I think we got it.

You know that you are working with a perfectionist when there are two people on set making the toilet paper look good.  Just think how good the photographs are going to look.  It’s all in the details.  We’re having a good time on set!

Any bets on who’s going to the Super Bowl?

Yesterday we were doing a casting in the studio and working with Roberto.  He mentioned his passion for cooking.  While talking about it, he said,”you know I have some Mushroom Soup and Risotto in my car.  Want to try some?”  We all agreed.  When he came back in to the studio he told us that he had a brisket marinading in his car too. He brought in a cooler.  He was like  the Mary Poppins of the kitchen.  I had to document it photographically because as they say, “you have to see it to believe it”.

Here we go … Roberto and his cooler.

A few cans of corn –

Cheddar Cheese and Crema Texicana and I Can’t Believe it’s Not Butter …

Key ingredients …

Limes because, clearly, they make Roberto happy…

More cheesy goodness …

And finally, the Brisket…

Simply amazing.  I will say that if the Brisket is as good as the mushroom soup and Risotto, I will be impressed.

It’s always warm in L.A.!  It’s always sunny in L.A.!   Nope, not this time.  This is how we all dressed on location in December in L.A. In fact, this is one of the creatives.  It rained.  It was cold. We made sunshine and the images look like it was sunny and warm.  After all, isn’t that what L.A. is all about? The illusion.

If you don’t, you may end up with an errant sock puppet.

When I was younger, my Dad used to say to me, “you kids don’t know how easy you’ve got it”.  I used to wonder what he meant.  I am not old. But I am one of the guys that used to shoot film.  My very first underwater job was before digital cameras.  I’ll never forget being on location and coming up with my camera and having the Art Director ask if it was going to be possible to see a Polaroid.  At that time, there was not anyway to make it happen.  We both laughed about it.  Recently, I have been shooting underwater and it is so different with a digital camera. So immediate.  You can make sure that you have the shot before the talent leaves set.  At the risk of sounding old, I am going to say it, “you kids don’t know how easy you’ve got it”.  Now I am going to go and call my Dad.
