We will be back in the good ‘ole U.S.A. on Monday and we will post lots of sunny shots from the beach in Mexico to help keep everyone warm. Have a great weekend everyone!

Today I wanted to take some time to talk about technique, something we don’t do here too often.  There have been some very positive comments about the “blown highlights” in some of my photography on www.dpreview.com and I wanted to share my thoughts here.  I tend to think in terms of contrast as it’s own entity and not separate highlights and shadows.  In fact I tend to think “there’s the photograph.”  Now it’s my job to get rid of the stuff that isn’t part of the picture in my mind.  Contrast is a big part of that.  I think a lot of photographers are afraid of contrast and try to heavily control it so there are no blocked shadows and no “blown highlights.”  I say, find the photograph and the rest will work itself out.  You’ll know what needs removing and controlling — contrast included.  Mostly, get out there, look, create, and most importantly see.  I’d love to see what you are shooting – send me an email, me@tomhussey.com.

Tom has recently converted an old Kodak camera to shoot digitally.  We think the effect is very retro.  We will be shooting some people with it soon and will post those images as well.
